About Us

Crochet Australia is an on-line business specializing in all things crochet. We provide crochet information and a wide range of quality crochet books, hooks, yarn, threads and crochet supplies at an affordable price, not only to Australian crocheters, but to crocheters all over the world. We also stock a range of knitting, candlewicking, tatting, macrame and hardanger books and accessories.

The Beginning of Crochet Australia

Crochet Australia started with just Craft Moods and Paragon publications, some threads and a few hooks in early 2002 with Vicki and Ray Moodie. I then bought the business in 2014 when I decided that after 25 years of being an accountant, I needed a change.

I relocated the business to Yandina, in the Sunshine Coast, on the east coast of Australia in Queensland. Just over an hours drive north of Brisbane.

I was taught to crochet by my mother at about the age of 5. But it wasn’t until I became the proud owner of Crochet Australia that I really put all my crochet abilities to the test. I became a ‘Crochet Master’ in 2017 completing the Masters in Advanced Crochet Stitches with the Crochet Guild of America. I then completed the Crochet Teaching Certification Level 1 and Level 2 with the Yarn Council of America. These have given me more skills and knowledge which I pass on to my customers with guidance and advice about patterns and yarns, in our weekly workshops. I just love to teach more people the art of this craft, and see them flourish.

In 2020 I was one of the founding Committee Members of the Crochet Guild of Australia After serving two terms as a member and seeing the Guild flourish, I was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Guild for my services. I have been involved in designing and delivering the Crochet Teaching Certificate issued by the Crochet Guild of Australia.

Unveiling latest crochet installation

After many hours of planning and work, Crochet Australia were excited to unveil their latest crochet installation in June this year – a beautiful Crochet Mandala Umbrella. With over 150 colourful crocheted mandalas of varying sizes made with the stunning colour selection of Fiddlesticks Wren 8ply cotton. They were honoured to have approximately 30 ladies, most of them Sunshine Coast locals, volunteer their time to crochet the mandalas with Crochet Australia supplying all the cotton required.

Over a period of 14 months these mandalas accumulated through several working bees held at Crochet Australia. This was a wonderful way to bring fellow crocheters together to learn the art of making mandalas by learning new stitches and working in the round and following various patterns, while others made the patterns up as they went so, they were truly unique mandalas for this special project. The mandalas were then joined together, and as you can imagine this was a time-consuming task that took approximately 6 months to complete. The outcome…. on Worldwide Knit and Crochet in Public Day in June 2023 the Umbrella was unveiled at a special event held at Crochet Australia.

Each of the beautiful mandalas are unique. Even though some of the designs were repeated the colour combinations for each were never repeated so you would never know they were the same design.

If you would like to see this artistic and colourful Crochet Mandala Umbrella, then you can visit Crochet Australia to see it on display. On sunny days the umbrella is put up for all who drop in to admire, take a photo with, and enjoy.

Lynda told us, “With the delightfully shaded space it provides, our regular Tuesday classes enjoy the ambience it brings on days we can sit outside and be truly inspired by it’s beauty as they work on their crochet projects for the morning.”

So, make sure you put it on your list to visit Crochet Australia and be inspired, motivated or just admire the sense of peace and beauty their Crochet Mandala Umbrella brings to the store.
