This month, we’re excited to spotlight a brand close to our hearts, Fiddlesticks yarn. Not only have we restocked your long-time favourites, but we’ve just received two brand new arrivals in-store and online:
Ashtonand Eddy.
Ashton is a gorgeously soft 100% cotton 8-ply yarn, spun in multicolour shades over a light base. It’s perfect for all your 8 ply projects; think toys, garments, baby wear, blankets and more. It pairs beautifully with the Wren for a unique colour mix or textured effect.
Eddy is a generous 220g, 4-ply gradient yarn made from 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, with a stunning 990m per cake. With its lightweight drape and breathable texture, it’s ideal for shawls, accessories, garments, and stylish home décor pieces.
The Fiddlesticks brand was created by Texyarns – a company supplying high quality yarns since 1952. Their extensive range is sourced from high quality spinners all over the world.
To celebrate, we sat down with Peter Betros, the co-founder behind the Fiddlesticks brand, to learn more about the brand’s origins, yarn range, and what makes them a standout in the Australian crochet and knitting community.
How did Fiddlesticks Yarns come to be?
We had Texyarns, which was an agent for some of the top European yarn spinners who produced yarn for companies that made jumpers for wholesale and retail. Hand knitting yarn was starting to pick up so we decided to create our own yarn brand.
We already were, and still are, the sole distributor for Katia of Spain for Australia and New Zealand.
What was the inspiration behind the name Fiddlesticks?
I don’t know if it was inspiration, but I do know there was a lot of what do you think of this name… And finally it was Fiddlesticks!
What sets Fiddlesticks apart from other yarn brands?
I don’t think you can separate the success of Fiddlesticks from the success of Texyarns, as they are equally important to each other.
Texyarns, the company, prides itself on its customer service and extremely fast turnaround time from receiving an order to dispatching, which is 98% of the time less than 24 hours. This has helped all our retailers offer great customer service to their customers.
Fiddlesticks has a wide selection of yarns, combed cottons, fine merino wools, and anti-pil acrylics that have been chosen to suit our Australian market. We are fortunate that Texyarns has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the selection of yarn. It took decades to acquire. So you can see the company and the brand are one.
But if you wanted just one word, it would be ‘knowledge’, one of the things you just can’t buy.
What’s your most popular yarn range?
The Superb range is the largest. I would say our customers love it because it performs to a very high standard. The colour selection is very large, it comes in 4, 8 and 10 ply. It suits women, men, kids, homeware and both crochet and knitting, so something for everyone!
We are normally 99% fully stocked of all the colours. which is a dream for anyone. No delays in a project.
How are the colour palettes chosen?
First, we take into consideration the fibre, as that is a huge consideration. Then, of course, the light in Australia is so unique to anywhere in the world, as we are a continent. That is a challenge. We have a very large library of yarn colours, so it is takes a while but we add, take out, put in… and so it goes. I don’t think you ever get it 100% right, but we give it a very good try. Always room to improve.
Do you have a favourite Fiddlesticks yarn range to work with personally?
Well, No. Neither of us can crochet or knit. But there are just a ‘few’ other things we do, so we can leave the crochet and knitting to you!
Can you share a story or moment that made you especially proud of your brand?
Watching it grow, it is a journey. None of it came easy, so maybe that is why it is extra special. Texyarns has built wonderful long standing relationships with top spinners in the world and retailers in Australia over the decades, that makes us proud.
How do you choose stockists to work with?
We don’t often choose stockists, they seem to find us…and we are very pleased we have Crochet Australia.
What do you value most in your relationships with yarn stores and the fibre art community?
We all need each other, how do we operate without one of the links? So we value every piece of the chain and that is inspiring.
